Next is set to close its store on Liverpool’s Church Street when its current lease comes to an end in the coming months.
A planning application submitted to Liverpool City Council by Savills, on behalf of retail and residential real estate investment management company Redevco, is seeking permission for the change of use of 18-20 Church Street in advance of Next vacating the unit “over the next few months”.
A document included with the recently filed proposals says the change of use will allow the upper floors and basement to be “retained in active economic uses by re-purposing the floorspace for a flexible range of uses”.
The document adds: “Next intend to vacate the unit within the next few months upon cessation of their current lease, which has resulted in the need to consider alternative options for the use of the floorspace.
“Due to the size of the retail unit (circa 7,700 sq. m total floorspace) there is no single retail operator which has expressed an interest in occupying the entirety of the floorspace, however interest in the space has been received from a range of occupiers including retail, leisure and storage operators.
“At this time, the final tenancy arrangements have not yet been finalised, which has produced the requirement for the floorspace to accommodate a flexible range of uses.”
The prominent Church Street building, which was previously home to C&A, comprises a total of seven floors, including one at basement level.
At this stage it’s not known whether Next will be relocating to a new city centre location.
Next has been approached for comment.
