Events to round-off half term reading campaign

Families can finish half term with fun and games this weekend as a special event continues the campaign to encourage reading in Liverpool.

More than 500 books are currently being given away across the Merseyrail network in the week-long holiday, ending with an activity-filled book sharing day on Sunday 21 February.

As part of the ongoing ‘Moved to Read’ partnership between City of Readers and Merseytravel , which has already seen more than 3,500 books being distributed across public transport, families are being invited to join a book share in the Liverpool Central station foyer from 9am on the day.

Then from 12.30pm Liverpool Central Library will welcome visitors for board games, live storytelling and family time with books in its reading spaces.

As the campaign also ties in with the Liverpool Counts initiative to boost numeracy standards in the city, families will be able to take home a numeracy related book from the library and adults can also sign up for the National Numeracy Challenge.

Ahead of the event Councillor Lana Orr, mayoral lead for primary education, says: “Literacy and numeracy are so important and in Liverpool we make every effort to give families opportunities to enjoy their learning. “That’s why we’re giving out free books and organising numeracy games and challenges. It’s a great way for families to learn together over half term and all part of the City of Readers and Liverpool Counts campaigns to get residents enjoying literacy and numeracy activities.”
