City region housing associations get funding boost

Hundreds of new homes could be built across the Liverpool City Region after the government announced the recipients of a new housing fund.

Six local authorities and housing associations in the area will get a share of the £32 million Estate Regeneration Fund which is designed to speed up the housebuilding process.

According to the government, a total of 105 estates will benefit from the funding nationally, which also helps address problems that hold up projects and will give local authorities access to skills to ensure high-quality regeneration.

The six housing estates to benefit from the funding here in the city region are: Linacre in Bootle, Stonedale Cresent in Croxteth, South Parade in Speke, Four Acre in St Helens, Sutton Way in Ellesmere Port and Murdishaw Estate in Runcorn.

Cobalt Housing, which has regenerated five homes which had stood empty for more than two years on Stonedale Crescent, Croxteth, has been awarded £415,000. The money will go towards new roofs, pathways and walls at more than 50 other homes in Stonedale.

Gavin Barwell, housing and planning minister, says: “Our Housing White Paper set out ambitious proposals to help fix the broken housing market and to encourage good design.

“Estates regeneration must be locally led, and this £32m fund will help breathe new life into estates throughout the country.

“It will help more ordinary working people have the security of a decent place to live.”

Peter Mitchell, chair of Cobalt Housing, adds “This is a fantastic opportunity to work with local residents living on the Stonedale Estate and find out the best way that we can help improve their lives.

“For too long we have been frustrated by a lack of progress. With the help of this funding, we’ll be able to fully engage with local people about the future of Stonedale and the surrounding area.

“Cobalt is working closely with residents and Liverpool City Council to make sure there is informed agreement on the way forward.”

In addition to the £32m released, £140m in loan funding is also available over the length of this parliament to encourage investment in regeneration from the private sector.
