John Lennon’s sister unveils Beatles statue at Pier Head

A statue of The Beatles has been unveiled by John Lennon’s sister on Liverpool’s waterfront.

Deputy mayor, Councillor Ann O’Byrne was also present at the event, which marked 50 years since the Fab Four’s last public appearance in the city on 5 December, 1965 at the Empire.

The 8ft bronze sculptures, donated to the city by the Cavern Club at a cost of £200,000, are based on photographs of the band taken at the Pier Head in 1963.

Sculpted by Andrew Edwards , who is also behind the ‘Truce’ WWI statue which is on display in St George’s Hall, the work was cast by Castle Fine Art Foundry at its base on Bridgewater Street in the Baltic Triangle.

Julia says: “I am honoured to be unveiling this statue in our wonderful city of Liverpool.

“It stands in loving memory of the best band in the world; the band that leapt from the Cavern stage to world-wide recognition.

“The timing reflects the 50 years since The Beatles final public appearance in Liverpool, at The Empire on the 5 December 1965. I was present at that event and am proud to be at the unveiling.”
