Last night I had the pleasure of experiencing Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most famed and notorious (and the UK’s longest running) musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, performed entertainingly at the Liverpool Empire Theatre. At first glance, the theatre itself is muted and understated but as soon as the curtain rises you are transformed to the magical land of old-age Israel and Ancient Egypt.

The dynamic set alongside the dazzling lighting provides a backdrop for a highly energetic, interactive and entertaining cast. Lead beautifully by X Factor finalist Lloyd Daniels and narrated by Danielle Hope of BBC’s ‘Over The Rainbow’, the assembly go on to tell the Biblical tale of Joseph and his eleven brothers through an unforgettable track list of songs such as ‘Any Dream Will Do’, ‘Those Canaan Days’ and ‘Close Every Door to Me.

Each actor is worth noting, but the standout star was undoubtedly understudy Perry O’Dea as Pharoah. With impeccable comedic timing and the ability to deliver quick and cutting one-liners, O’Dea makes the show equally enjoyable and amusing for children and parents alike.

Director Bill Kenwright has put together an amazing production with impressive and artistic scene changes, a clear focus, and the ability to keep audience members enthralled throughout. With every move choreographed to perfection and a beautiful background choir, sound and vision come together in amazing Technicolor.
