A new train station in the Knowledge Quarter could lead to the creation of a “residential hotspot” according to the innovation hub’s chief executive.

Colin Sinclair has seen proposals for the new station which will link the district to Liverpool Central through the Wapping Tunnel.

Speaking to Your Move, Colin says he thinks a new cluster of residential developments will spring up across the 450-acre district because of the attractiveness of the train station.

He adds: “If you look at London, anywhere where the London Underground goes is a real residential hotspot.

“What we’re doing is embarking on a journey to create Liverpool’s ‘Underground’.

“You’re going to find that hotspots spring up around that train station – so whether it’s the Georgian Quarter or Toxteth – that train station is really going to add to the residential appeal of the area.”

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said last year that he wants to see work begin on the new station by 2021.

A year earlier Liverpool is set to welcome Merseyrail’s fleet of new and improved trains after city region leaders gave the £460 million project the go ahead last December.

The new vehicles are said to be capable of carrying 60% more passengers than current trains on the network and will cut journey times by 10%.

The trains will replace the near 40-year-old fleet which currently runs on Merseyrail’s network – the oldest in the UK.
