Plans to build a new ‘co-living’ housing development in Liverpool have been revealed.

Described as a cross between student flats and hotels, co-living schemes offer tenants rooms in apartments with access to communal lounges, kitchens, and gyms.

Applicant CRC wants permission to develop a building rising from 8 to 11 storeys on the site of a car park opposite India Buildings at the junction of Drury Lane and Brunswick Street.

The scheme would provide 35 co-living units, with communal facilities including kitchen, dining and lounge space, as well as a laundry, gym and cinema.

Proposals submitted to Liverpool City Council are for 21 ‘clusters ‘(multi-room apartments) and 14 apartments (50% one-bedroom units and 50% two-bedroom units).

Floors one to seven would be split into three ‘clusters’ – offering 126 en-suite units in all.

The application says the concept of co-living is aimed at “young professionals, single persons, students (typically post-graduates), and others who are being out priced by the current private rental market”.

Plans to develop a 63-room apart-hotel on the same site as the proposed Liverpool scheme were awarded planning consent in February.

According to a document included with the co-living application, the “client company maintains firm interest” in developing the site for the apart-hotel and is continuing to negotiate with interested hotel operators.

The document adds that whilst those discussions are ongoing, the site has been highlighted as a “prime location” for a co-living project.
