Liverpool delights in A-level success

Liverpool’s students are celebrating today after positive A-level results were reported across the city yesterday (18 August).

According to provisional figures, the results have exceeded the overall national average by 0.7%.

Grades achieved by students at the city’s schools indicate they have improved. While the national pass rate remained static at 98.1%, Liverpool’s schools achieved 98.8%.

Similarly, Liverpool’s A* to C category increased to 73%, up by 2.3%.

Meanwhile, the A*-A rate fell marginally by 0.1%, reflecting the national position in which the overall proportion of A* to A grades also fell.

Notably, the School Improvement Liverpool Community Languages Project was particularly successful. Results here indicate 70% of students who took Arabic, Polish and Chinese achieved impressive A* to A grades.

The results are expected to boost the city’s three universities, Liverpool Hope, Liverpool John Moores and the University of Liverpool, as well as coming as welcome news to local educators.

This year the release of A-Level results coincided with an increase in the number of university places offered to students which is up 3% from the same period last year.

This trend is expected to continue in the long term as Liverpool gains a more educated workforce, bringing increased investment to the city as more university places become available.

Councillor Nick Small, Assistant Mayor and Cabinet member for Education, Employment and Skills says: “Although these are provisional figures it appears that we are on target to outscore the national figures.

“These are extremely encouraging results and those students who worked so hard to achieve them deserve the highest praise.

“The results mean many of our young people are able to go on to university, college or advanced apprenticeships.

“Liverpool needs a highly qualified and highly skilled workforce and these results are a very positive step in that direction.”
