High profile leisure operators have approached Liverpool City Council with proposals for a new waterpark at the former International Festival Gardens site.
An as yet unnamed German company, which is developing similar schemes in New York and Shanghai, has created preliminary designs for a £100 million attraction which hopes to attract up to 2m visitors a year.
According to a report to be discussed at a meeting of the city council’s cabinet next week, two operators with propositions which would “deliver the expectations” set out in the strategic vision and masterplan for the waterfront site have come forward.
The reports adds: “The city council has been approached by a German leisure operator which delivers 365 day a year high end indoor water, leisure, health facilities.
“This operator has produced some early concepts for the Festival Gardens site that would require 25 acres to deliver an architectural statement with car parking in a landscaped environment.”
The council has also been approached by a “nationally acclaimed leisure operator” which has expressed interest in delivering the waterpark.
Both interested parties are expected to be invited to submit business cases outlining their proposals in full.
The council is redeveloping Festival Gardens as part of its Festival Park regeneration project, which aims to create a residential and leisure destination on the banks of the River Mersey.
The local authority aims to appoint a developer for the Festival Park scheme by the end of October.
