A Liverpool man famous for walking in his blue Everton FC swimming trunks will be trekking up England’s highest peak this Saturday (4 February) as part of his final fundraiser.
Michael Cullen, better known as Speedo Mick, is currently braving the cold as he attempts to walk 1,000 miles from John O’Groats to Land’s End – tackling the Three Peaks Challenge along the way.
Mick, who started his ‘final stomp’ late last year and is closing in on his £100,000 target, will be joined on his attempt to summit Scafell Pike (978m) by troops from the Royal Marines.
The 58-year-old from Dovecot has raised more than £800,000 over the last seven years for mental health and suicide prevention charities.
The Liverpudlian, who scaled Ben Nevis last month, says: “Sadly after I have finished this, I will be hanging up my blue knickers forever more.
“I have spent seven years tirelessly fundraising for charity and I’m a bit knackered now! But it’s not over yet, as we have this last walk to complete before I say goodbye to my stomping days.”
“I have suffered from mental health most of my adult life and still do suffer from it to this day. The donations from this walk will be going to our very first SpeedoMick Foundation. It’s a dream come true for me to be able to give back to my community and support people who are suffering.”
Mick kick-started his latest walk just after Christmas in John O’Groats and will be travelling through Glasgow, Lancaster and Liverpool as part of the trip, which is expected to last just over one month. It’s hoped Mick will be joined by friends along the way as he travels through the UK.
He adds: “The SpeedoMick Foundation was originally set up in 2020 and alongside our fundraising on this charity walk, we will also be gifting grants to small grassroots charities that support mental health, disadvantaged young people and homelessness.”
