Participation numbers on the up at Liverpool Tennis Centre

The number of people participating in tennis at Liverpool’s only pay-and-play facility is on the rise.

According to new figures, Liverpool Tennis Centre in Wavertree has in particular seen a significant rise in the number of children getting involved with the sport.

A report into the progress of the centre, to be discussed by Liverpool’s culture, tourism and events select committee tomorrow (27 September), claims that as of August 2016 there were 300 children taking part in ‘mini tennis’, as opposed to just 34 in October 2014. The Liverpool Schools Tennis Roadshow has also now visited 5,000 children in primary schools across the city.

Liverpool City Council, in partnership with the LTA and Tennis Foundation, are currently two years into a three year project to turn around the participation and financial performance of Liverpool Tennis Centre.

The vision is to raise the performance of Liverpool Tennis Centre by increasing the number of adult, children and students playing tennis on a regular basis.

The complex, which is one of only seven indoor community tennis centres in the North West, is currently in the process of resurfacing its outdoor courts to increase the number of hours they can be used.

In 2015, Liverpool Tennis Centre was presented with the Lancashire Community Tennis Venue of the Year, as part of the Aegon British Tennis Awards.
