Post office and coffee shop planned for empty Lewis’s unit

Plans to convert an empty unit at the Lewis’s building into a post office and coffee shop have been revealed.

Now part of the Central Village project, Lewis’s closed in 2010 and is currently home to PureGym and Adagio Aparthotel.

The new retail space would see the creation of two new shop fronts on the Renshaw Street side of the well-known building, with a new staircase leading from the post office to the coffee shop also installed.

The application, submitted to Liverpool City Council, states that there will be “no significant change to the existing building fabric which cannot be reversed”.

If approved, the scheme also plans to utilise the existing retail floor of ‘Unit 6′, with the building’s fluted columns to be retained as a “major design feature” within the open space.

The first of the Lewis’s department stores opened on the site in 1856, the Liverpool branch became the flagship of the famous chain.

After going into administration in 1991 Lewis’s was sold to rival Owen Owen before being sold to Vergo Retail in 2007 . The Liverpool branch finally closed in May 2010.
