Saving energy: 6 Quick tips

Wash away the costs
Whilst it may be invigorating, that routine daily shower could be proving costly. According to the Energy Saving Trust, spending one minute less in the shower each day could shave £10 a year off energy bills, and that’s per person. If the whole family makes the change you’re sure to clean up!

Stop rising energy
High ceilings may be a striking feature of a room, particularly in period homes, but they do make rooms much bigger and harder to heat. Placing a shelf just above a radiator can prevent the heat from rising straight up and deflect it into the centre of a room instead.

Window to warmth
As well as natural light, windows can invite warmth into your home on sunny days so make the most of it by keeping curtains and blinds open in the day time. Be sure to close them to help retain heat during colder climates and at night time, but avoid covering radiators with long curtains as it can guide heat out of the window.

Saving energy: Quick tips

L to R: Shave your shower time by just one minute a day; Quicken cooking by covering your pans; Allow sunlight in but don’t let curtains cover your radiators.

Keep dust at bay
It’s easy to forget about the back of our kitchen appliances, but clearing the dust away from the condenser coils at the back of a fridge can minimise the energy it uses.

Clever cooking
Heat up food on the hob more efficiently by using the right size pan for the food and the hob, and also by keeping lids on pans so that they heat up quicker and limit energy usage.

Dry another way
Steer clear of hanging damp clothing over radiators to dry. Not only will it make work harder for the heater, but it could also risk causing condensation and damp in your home.
