Student accommodation lined up for Mount Pleasant area storage unit

An industrial unit close to Liverpool’s universities could be transformed into new student accommodation.

The Pomona Street building, which has previously been used as a storage and distribution facility by Everkool Limited, could be brought back into full use if plans are given the go-ahead.

Turning the building into a house of multiple occupancy with rooms for seven students would help towards “preserving and enhancing” the Mount Pleasant Conservation Area it is set in, according to an application submitted to Liverpool City Council.

Given the unit was originally built for garage, warehouse and industrial purposes, alterations would be made to raise the height of the building by 1-1.2 metres to incorporate new windows and create satisfactory living conditions if proposals are given the go-ahead.

According to a planning document by Dunlin Group, which has worked on the design for the project, the proposals “acknowledge that the city centre is attractive for the student population but it is aware that a balanced range of accommodation is required across the city to prevent the creation of student ‘ghettos’ which are poorly related to established patterns of city life and activities”.

The statement adds: “It is considered that this site, on the very edge of two university centres and surrounded by a mixture of other uses, would not result in a student dominated area, especially taking into account the size of the unit, but would blend with those other developments.

“There are other student residences in the wider surrounding area but it is considered that these are sufficiently separate to prevent the development of a student ghetto.”
