Four-bedroom family properties are the ideal homes for Liverpool residents according to a new survey.

As part of an ongoing national ‘Great Home Debate’ by the charity Shelter and British Gas, more than 400 people were asked about what it takes for a house to become a home and the features they would prefer.

The research, which aims to help shape new standards for homes in the 21^st Century, showed the majority of participants would opt for a modern, detached family home over a more lavish abode.

Off-street parking was important to 63% of the residents and 81% would choose to have a garden, while only 24% would want a swimming pool.

Meanwhile 60% would like a utility room and 40% would pick an office, with 23% wanting somewhere to play games and just 6% deciding a separate flat would feature in their ideal property.

‘Family’ was the most used word used by surveyed residents to first describe their home, with ‘comfort’, ‘security’ and ‘love’ proving to be other popular choices.

With Shelter now calling on more of members of public to share their thoughts on the meaning of ‘home’ as part of the Great Home Debate, chief executive Campbell Robb says: “Shelter has been the champion for homes for 50 years and together with the public, we want to create change for future generations.
