Tesco could soon be opening a new store in Liverpool city centre.
The grocery giant has applied for a licence to operate a supermarket at an address in Williamson Square.
According to an licensing act application submitted to Liverpool City Council, Tesco wants to operate at 21-25 Williamson Square between the hours of 6am and 11.30pm.
The address named is part of the Marks & Spencer building – the £5 million extension to its flagship store which was completed in 2013.
Initial proposals for the national retailer to occupy the extra space were quickly shelved and it was then envisaged that other retailers would occupy the three units. Despite this the units have now been empty for more than three years.
If Tesco does open in Williamson Square it would be its 13th supermarket in the city centre.
A Tesco spokesperson has told Your Move: “We are keen to open an Express store and serve customers in Williamson Square.
“As part of the application we will engage with local stakeholders and responsible authorities and look forward to the decision from the licensing committee.”
Last month Liverpool-based social enterprise PLACED held a special event in Williamson Square which invited members of the public to share their views on the future of the piazza.
According to PLACED, the square receives considerably less footfall than other shopping locations within the city centre and is currently a “mishmash of architectural design”.
