Wirral Waters named new Housing Zone for development

Wirral Waters will contribute to delivering 10,000 new homes on brownfield land around the country as it has been named as one of six new Housing Zones by the government.

Announcing new initiatives to ‘speed up’ house building, housing minister Gavin Barwell confirmed the areas will have access to a new £18 million ’capacity fund’.

This latest list of zones also includes sites in Sheffield, Grimsby and Cleethorpes, Barnsley, Sandwell and Blackburn and Burnley.

The brownfield land areas will see councils work in partnership with private developers to deliver new properties, and they will be able to use shares of the fund to ‘unlock their full potential’ as it aims to assist in tackling planning issues which can cause delay and prevent work from starting quickly.

The housing minister says: “We want to turbo-charge house building on large sites to get the homes built in the places people want to live, so that this country works for everyone, not just the privileged few.

“These sites offer enormous potential to transform brownfield land into new homes and our £18 million funding will help get them built much sooner.”

There are now 26 Housing Zones in total across the country with an aim to deliver 44,000 homes, and a further 31 designated within London.

The government is also planning to invite local authorities to submit proposals for new areas to be designated.
