Work begins on £25 million Walton housing scheme

Construction is underway on a £25 million project to regenerate the former Walton Hospital site.

The scheme will create 195 homes alongside an Aldi supermarket, which will generate 50 new jobs for the area.

Famous for being the birthplace of Sir Paul McCartney, the hospital was demolished in 2011 and its services moved to Fazakerley.

Mulbury will develop 125 affordable homes for housing and regeneration organisation Riverside and a further 70 properties for private sale.

Andrew Booth, land and planning director at Mulbury, says: “Before we took on this scheme, the site had been lying vacant for some time and there were complex legal, planning and technical challenges to overcome before it could be redeveloped.

“The remediation of the site is progressing well given the challenging nature of the project. We’re now looking forward to seeing these new homes come out of the ground over the coming months and a new community taking shape.”

Councillor Ann O’Byrne, deputy mayor, adds: “This is a fantastic scheme which will create good quality homes and also see a new community created in this area.”

Work on the Aldi supermarket is expected to complete by summer 2016 with the housing part of the scheme due to be finished by the end of 2017.
