A total of 150 Liverpool homes will go on sale for just £1, after the Homes for a Pound scheme was extended.

Houses in the Smithdown Road area in Picton will be the next to be sold for £1 under the scheme, according to a report going to the council’s cabinet on 2 April. The new batch of homes will be sold in five stages and new owners will have to commit to refurbishment work before being handed the keys to the properties.

The news comes just months after Jayalal Madde moved in to the first refurbished home for £1 in Granby Four Streets, where 20 properties will be converted as part of the first phase of the scheme. A waiting list of 1,000 people applied for the first 20 properties and new applicants will be allowed to express and interest in the next phase.

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson says: “We had overwhelming interest in our pilot Homes for a Pound scheme and those projects are now starting to come to fruition, transforming run down properties into beautiful family homes.

“Now that we know that this type of scheme is a viable way of bringing empty homes back into use, we are going to expand it significantly.”

The scheme includes homes on Britannia Avenue, Altcar Avenue, Childwall Avenue, Dorset Avenue, Bird Street, Richardson Street, Garrick Street, Tunstall Street and Webster Road.

The report also says shops along Smithdown Road could be sold for £1 in an extension to the scheme.
