Task force to review Liverpool’s student accommodation boom

A task group has been set up to review the amount of student accommodation in Liverpool, the City Council has announced.

A surge in student housing developments in the city centre and fringe areas such as the Baltic Triangle and Ropewalks areas have led to the creation of a task force made up of universities, student bodies and developers to assess the student market.

The group will assess the suitability and viability of the current student accommodation in the city centre, the need for more to be built and how it affects areas of the city centre.

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson says:  “I have asked for this review because, although we very much welcome and value the contribution that students make to the city, we need to be mindful of the recent rapid growth in student accommodation, and the knock on effects it could have should there be any marked fluctuations in demand. It is crucial we have a diverse mix of uses of buildings in the city centre for residents, businesses, students and visitors alike.”

There are currently 50,000 students in Liverpool and city centre universities have reported annual growth of 18% in new admissions. A report recommending the task force is set up will be considered by the Cabinet on 2 April. If it is agreed a final report will be completed by May 2015.
