7 best places to eat and drink as River of Light heads to the region

It’s set to be the biggest firework celebration the city has ever seen and it’s now just days away. Excitement is reaching fever pitch over the River of Light Bonfire Night spectacular which will see the River Mersey brought to life with a stunning firework display. If you’re heading down to the river for the showstopping event, we’ve put together a rundown of the best bars, restaurants and cafes to help you make a night of it.

Matou, Georges Parade, Pier Head

 

 

For an event on the river you’d be hard pushed to find a better viewing spot than Matou. The Pan Asian restaurant sits above the Ferry Terminal in the centre of the Pier Head. Floor to ceiling windows offer an unparalleled view of the river so you enjoy the River of Light in all its glory.

 

Make a meal of it

Panoramic 34, 8 Brook Street

 

Situated on the 34th floor of Liverpool’s tallest tower, Panoramic 34 offers stunning views across the city and beyond. Enjoy the displays while lapping up the luxury of this fine dining restaurant. A tasting menu is available on Saturdays at £65 per person, or £95 per person with wine. Alternatively opt for a cocktail in the bar while you watch the show. You’ll need to book in advance.

 

Get festive

Kazimier Winter Garden, 32 Seel Street

 

Returning for another year, Kazimier’s Winter Garden is the perfect spot to head to after the display when you’re feeling all festive and excited. Twinkly fairy lights, outdoor heaters and the new ‘Alpine cove’ give this place a magical feel while its wintery drinks menu of hot toddies, mulled wine and warming cocktails is the perfect way to round off your night.

Baltic Fleet, 33A Wapping

 

Nothing says winter like a roaring open fire and the Baltic Fleet pub on Wapping has got one of the best. Head to this 19th Century pub after the extravaganza to warm up by the fire, sample some homemade ales brewed in the basement micro brewery and try some traditional pub grub.

 

Hot toddy

Rococo , 61 Lord Street

 

What better way to warm up before the display than by heading to Rococo for an Irish Coffee. Open until 7pm on Saturdays, this Lord Street eatery offers light snacks, sweet treats and delicious hot drinks including our favourite, the Baileys Latte.

 

Waterfront wonder

The Refreshment Rooms, Bedford Road East, Birkenhead

 

This restaurant and bar is a firm favourite with locals thanks to its tasty food and fantastic views of the River Mersey and it’s likely to be a hit on Bonfire Night. It’s particularly popular for its steaks, in case you’re wondering what to order.

United Kitchen, 7 Marine Point, New Brighton

 

New independent restaurant United Kitchen is based at New Brighton’s Marine Point and overlooks Liverpool’s docks, making it an ideal spot for 5 November. Modern British cuisine is served throughout the day while an extensive wine list and impressive selection of cocktails make it an ideal evening venue.
