Families have begun to move into new homes built on the site the former Dunlop Wellington boot making factory in Walton.

Liverpool Mutual Homes (LMH) in partnership with MCI Developments Ltd, is in the process of building 58 new energy efficient homes at the Hazeldale Road site.

The land had stood empty since 2000 when the Dunlop factory closed its doors after 150 years of manufacturing.

LMH has contributed £6.2 million to the £7.3m scheme with £1.1m coming from the Homes and Communities Agency’s 2015/18 Affordable Homes Programme.

Angela Forshaw, director of landlord services at LMH, says: “As part of the Liverpool Housing Partnership, we are bringing brownfield sites back into use to help address the city’s shortage of good quality affordable homes.

“The homes have already been well received by existing local residents and there’s been high demand for the new properties.

“Not only do they have new, warm homes with modern features but the green measures installed means they will benefit financially too with much lower fuel bills.”

The scheme will include 45 two-bed houses and 13 three-bed properties when fully completed in the summer.

The homes feature high specification kitchens and bathrooms alongside state-of-the-art boilers, double glazing and wall and loft insulation, making them affordable to heat.

Councillor Ann O’Byrne, Liverpool City Council’s deputy mayor, says: “In its day the factory was a big local employer but since it closed it has blighted the landscape and stood empty for too long.

“It was a prime site for housing and we’re delighted LMH has been able to revive it and build so many homes so quickly.

“I’m sure people will enjoy making them their homes.”
