Liverpool to mark Hillsborough verdicts

A special commemoration event is taking place at Liverpool’s St George’s Hall this evening (27 April) to mark the verdict of the Hillsborough inquests.

Led by Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson and family members of the 96 football supporters who lost their lives in the 1989 stadium disaster, the ceremony will include tributes, music, speeches and moments of reflection looking back at the 27-year justice campaign.

The public are invited to gather around St George’s Hall plateau and Lime Street from 5.45pm. Those who wish to leave flowers or scarves in tribute can do so at the lower steps of the building.

The event, which will be compèred by Radio Merseyside’s Roger Phillips, will include speeches by civic leaders, a performance of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ by Sense of Sound choir, and a big screen depicting the names and ages of those who died in the tragedy.

Mayor Anderson says: “The commemorative event at St George’s Hall is an opportunity for the city to come together with the families and campaigners and show the world the overwhelming spirit of comradeship and solidarity that exists in this city towards them.

“So many people have been touched by their struggle over nearly three decades. They are an example to everyone who seeks out truth and justice and tomorrow’s event is a chance for the city to say ‘thank you’ to them and to remember the lives of their loved ones.”
