The Flyover Takeover festival will return to Liverpool this summer, taking place over five Sundays between July and September.

The event will see artists, musicians, dancers, cyclists, and walkers take over the flyover on Churchill Way, with a day-long Cultural Symposium preceding the celebrations next week.

The Maverick City, which explores grassroots community projects and urban spaces in Europe, will take place ahead of the festival at the Liverpool Playhouse Studio in Williamson Square on 24 June.

Artists involved in the event include Luke Jerram, Move Me, Acrojou, Mersey Wylie, Thom Morecroft and Radio Exotica.

Organised by We Make Places and Friends of the Flyover with funding from Arts Council England and other organisations, the Flyover Takeover festival aims to highlight the potential of the urban walkway as a community space.

Plans are in place to transform the concrete highway into an elevated parkway in the sky for cyclists and pedestrians which doubles as an outdoor cultural and community event space.

“The support of the Arts Council, Liverpool City Council and the local community has been amazing and it is giving us the opportunity to bring world class cultural activity to an underused part of the city and, we hope, to new audiences.”
