Scientific research vessel the RRS Discovery has arrived in Liverpool as part of an educational initiative from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).
Members of the public are invited to observe the 100m-long ship from the dockside while it is moored beside the Cruise Terminal at the city’s waterfront from today until 7 October.
From 5.30pm each evening, the RRS Discovery will be illuminated, bathed in light with accompanying effects to put on a night-time show for visitors.
A limited number of tickets for a free tour of the ship, complete with apparatus demonstrations from the crew were available online, but are fully booked up.
The RRS Discovery is in Liverpool as part of government organisation NERC’s Into The Blue science celebration, which aims to educate people about the work environmental scientists do and inspire the next generation of researchers.
NERC is the government body which funds much of the environmental scientific research in the UK and also the organisation behind the RRS Sir David Attenborough, the vessel behind the infamous ‘Boaty McBoatface’ public poll.
