New government measures to help tackle the housing crisis have been welcomed by a Merseyside housebuilder.

Chancellor Philip Hammond and communities secretary Sajid Javid have outlined plans to bankroll the construction of 40,000 extra residential properties by 2020, including the launch of a £3 billion Home Builders Fund to support smaller scale developers.

Elan has praised the government’s strategy – which was unveiled at the at the Conservative Party Conference – declaring that it could enable to the firm to undertake more projects across the region, including developments in Liverpool.

Marie Morris, sales director for Elan Homes in the North, says: “Measures to address the housing shortage are very much needed and as a niche developer we welcome the announcement of steps to support house building. As further details of the initiative are announced we’ll be reviewing how it could enable us to deliver more new homes across the North West, including Liverpool and the wider Merseyside area.

“We’ve recently launched our Aigburth Grange development ‘off plan’, but as there’s a genuine need for new homes across the region we’re keen to acquire additional land with development potential. Our land team will be keen to learn more about plans to support new homes being built on brownfield sites and development on publicly owned land.”

The Home Builders Fund will initially release £1 billion of short term loans for SME builders to deliver 25,000 houses by 2020, while a further £2 billion of long term funding for infrastructure aims to deliver up to 200,000 homes.
