Plans are in to convert the former ABC cinema on Lime Street into a new live music venue.
Neptune Developments wants to bring the vacant Art Deco landmark back into use creating a venue of “international standing” to hold crowds of up-to 1,500 with a TV studio, bar and a restaurant.
The proposals tie in with the developer’s wider scheme to regenerate Lime Street with the creation of new retail space and leisure provision, student accommodation and a new Premier Inn hotel.
Last December it was revealed that two unnamed companies were in the running to operate the new venue.
Meanwhile, the council’s cabinet will meet this Friday (3 March) to discuss plans for the wider Knowledge Quarter Gateway which covers Mount Pleasant, Brownlow Hill, the western side of Lime Street and the former ‘051’ club.
The council wants the go-ahead to create a masterplan for the area and is seeking approval for the potential use of Compulsory Purchase powers across the gateway, which is seen as a crucial part of the overall Knowledge Quarter development.
A report to be discussed by the cabinet reads: “Certain properties are key to the implementation of any regeneration plan, and in particular to enable the comprehensive redevelopment of the Mount Pleasant car park site.
“The Mount Pleasant multi-storey car park is owned by the council and along with the adjacent former dairy site which is in private ownership, forms part of a comprehensive redevelopment opportunity which could include a number of future uses.
“Therefore, this report also seeks an ‘in principle’ approval for the council to utilise its Compulsory Purchase powers if required and in accordance with the masterplan.”
