New Sainsbury’s ‘a milestone for Great Homer Street’

The launch of a new Sainsbury’s store on Great Homer Street has been hailed as a “significant milestone” for the area.

The supermarket chain opened a 40,000 sq ft outlet at the Project Jennifer regeneration site yesterday (31 May) and created 220 local jobs in the process.

Paul Batho, projects director at St. Modwen – the company behind the regeneration scheme, says: “The opening of Sainsbury’s marks a significant milestone in the regeneration of Great Homer Street.

“Both St. Modwen and the local community welcome Sainsbury’s to Great Homer Street. The supermarket is an integral part of the regeneration of the area and it’s fantastic to see so many jobs have been created for local people.”

Sainsbury’s latest North Liverpool branch includes an on-site cafe, eBay collection point and Argos store, the latter of which has created between 15 and 20 jobs.

The council-backed Project Jennifer regeneration scheme is still ongoing, with work to create a new district centre on course to conclude by the end of the year.

Paul adds: “The new district centre, which will be anchored by Sainsbury’s, is on track to be opened this year and it is anticipated that the regeneration of Great Homer Street will create approximately 1,000 jobs in total.”
