Recent debate over the future of Lime Street has led to the creation of the UK’s first city centre Neighbourhood Plan to allow residents a greater say on city centre developments.

The Liverpool BID Company has secured funding that could revolutionise the way planning works in an area stretching from Lime Street to The Strand. It plans to find 21 people who live or work in the area to create a forum, which will then vote on developments before they are brought forward by the local authority.

The forum could have influence over homes, urban design and economic development in the city centre area, according to the Liverpool BID Company.

Bill Addy, chief executive of Liverpool BID Company, says: “Liverpool city centre is constantly evolving but not always to everyone’s desires, underpinned by a planning process that makes many feel like silent observers.

“This Neighbourhood Plan is about giving those who invest their lives and livelihoods in the city centre a unique platform to develop a shared vision that will genuinely shape the future of where they live and work.

“The tools are there to create a positive framework for future development that would carry real weight in the planning process.

“This plan has huge potential and such is the passion in Liverpool we’ve already had a great amount of interest. I look forward to hearing from as many different parties at the city centre forum meetings next week.”

To begin the groundbreaking process two meetings have been planned. The first will take place at 6pm on Monday 23 March upstairs in All Bar One and at 8.30am on Tuesday 24 March at Hard Day’s Night Hotel.

The news comes as debate takes place over Neptune Development’s recently-released concepts for Lime Street, which would see much of the current facade demolished to make way for a new development.
