Metropolitan Cathedral and Cunard Building added to LightNight 2015 venues

The Metropolitan Cathedral, Maritime Museum and the Cunard Building will open for Lightnight 2015 for the first time.

The one-off, late-night festival will take place across 50 Liverpool venues on Friday 15 May and three new buildings will join the celebration of the city’s art and heritage.

In honour of the Three Queens arriving on the Mersey in May, visitors will be able to see an installation by Make Space Create, called Time Liners, at the Cunard Building’s spectacular ticket office.

Elsewhere, the Metropolitan Cathedral will host 12 of the region’s choirs for A Celebration of Song on the night. The Merseyside Maritime Museum will also open its doors for the first time with its exhibition looking at the doomed WWI ship, the Lusitania. The evening includes nautical-inspired readings.

Assistant Mayor and Cabinet member for culture, tourism and events Councillor Wendy Simon, says: “LightNight signals the start of seven weeks of amazing events in the city, with our iconic waterfront being the focal point for many of the activities.

“We are delighted to be able to open up the Cunard Building to the public on LightNight– for many people it will be the first chance they have had to come inside this beautiful venue. Not only can they take in the stunning surroundings, but the Time Liners project will add an extra, unforgettable element.

“We look forward to welcoming as many people as possible on LightNight and we hope large numbers of visitors will make the most of this unique opportunity.”

Other venues set to feature LightNight 2015 events include St George’s Hall, Liverpool John Moores University, Central Library, The Bluecoat, FACT, Liverpool Town Hall, St Luke’s ‘Bombed Out’ Church, Liverpool Cathedral, Camp and Furnace, Victoria Gallery & Museum, Constellations, Open Eye Gallery, Baltic Creative, The Well and many more.”

The full LightNight programme will be released at the end of the March 2015.
