A derelict city centre site near to John Moores University will be turned into student accommodation, after an application was submitted.

The former St John’s church school on Great Crosshall Street, which is a Grade II-listed building, will be converted to apartments for students, according to an application by Bridgewater Services Limited.

A second application will see a new building erected in a derelict site next to the building, adding 62 student rooms to the site.

Several applications have been submitted for the site over the past decade, ranging from apartments to retail. However, the latest work was abandoned in 2007 after initial excavation had taken place and the site has remained vacant ever since.

The St John’s church school building was built in the 1860s and is now warehouses. The three-storey building was boarded up in the 1980s.

The area is named St Patrick’s Court, as it is near to St Patrick’s Cross, a memorial on Standish Street that is believed to be the site where St Patrick preached his final sermon before departing to Ireland to convert the people to Christianity.
