Plans to bring a vacant brownfield site in St Helens back into use with a mixed-used residential development have been revealed.

Proposals to erect a two-storey building comprising apartments, retail and office space on Millsfields Court at Eccleston Grange have been submitted to St Helens Council.

The development would include eight flats on the upper floor, as well as five ground floor units fit for multiple purposes, one office unit, landscaping and parking facilities for residents.

An adjacent complex dubbed Building 1 plays host to a Sainsbury’s Local, White Cross Vets and a vacant unit with 10 apartments above.

The vacant part of the site was previously envisioned as hosting a structure called Building 2 with a two-storey medical centre and pharmacy inside, but terms were not agreed with the NHS.

The applicant, commercial property firm Orbit Developments, is therefore seeking planning permission to bring the site back into use with an alternative scheme.

The projects aims to bolster a wider regeneration initiative in the Eccleston Grange area, with Orbit’s sister company Jones Homes having undertaken a residential scheme nearby.

A statement issued to St Helens Council reads: “The proposal enhances the residential development already approved and helps to achieve the council’s overall vision for the redevelopment of the site.

“The development will directly and indirectly create additional employment opportunities without adversely impacting on residential amenities in the area.”
