Liverpool residents are being urged to donate food, old clothing and other items to homeless and vulnerable people in the city, as two charity initiatives have been launched.

Tomorrow (19 November), digital and creative event organisers at Creative Kitchen will be collecting goods to donate to Liverpool’s Whitechapel Centre homeless charity.

From 9am and throughout the day, people can drop off old coats, towels, food, sleeping bags and more for the local homeless charity at Launch22 inside the Tempest Building on Tithebarn Street.

The collection, which will also raise awareness of Whitechapel’s ‘No Second Night Out’ support number which helps the charity to locate rough sleepers in the city, coincides with Creative Kitchen’s monthly ‘Made Here’ event which will take place from 5.30-8pm.

Following the theme of ‘Tech for Good’, the event will be led Alder Hey Children’s Foundation NHS Trust and features keynote speakers FACT, So-Mo and The Fresh Group.

Creative Kitchen curator, Gavin Sherratt, says: “With the growing issues related to homelessness we thought of the good work carried out by The Whitechapel Centre and the need to support them in collecting much needed supplies of coats and clothes.

“Our sector is amazing at naturally supporting good causes and hopefully with our Made Here donations campaign we can help the Whitechapel Centre to support others with their good work during the cold winter months.”

Meanwhile, the city centre’s Metquarter shopping centre is also collecting gifts, toys and non-perishable food in the run up to the festive season to help vulnerable families across Liverpool.

Until Sunday 13 December, shoppers can hand in donations at a dedicated area next to the florist on the lower mall.

Food will be given to the Trussell Trust’s Central Liverpool Food Bank in Wavertree, which provides three days’ worth of emergency food for individuals and families in short-term food crisis.

Unwrapped gifts will be presented during the Imagine If Trust’s Christmas Day event at the Frontline Centre in Wavertree, which provides a meal for around 250 people and families in the city who may be isolated, vulnerable or would otherwise go without.

Metquarter’s centre manager, Jennina O’Neill, says: “We’re thrilled to be partnering with the Imagine If Trust for our third year.  We received a fantastic amount of donations from members of the public last year and we’re hoping to repeat this, this Christmas.”
