In a week’s time thousands of revellers will descend on Camp Hill for what promises to be a highlight of the ‘Sgt Pepper at 50’ celebrations.

The man behind the highly anticipated one-off lights show, Christophe Berthonneau, says people should expect “the opposite of a normal fireworks show”.

During the last few months, Christophe, artistic director at the world renowned French fireworks company Groupe F, has been busy devising the main event for a night of performance, story telling, music, light and pyrotechnics in the South Liverpool park.

Christophe, who has produced pyrotechnic displays for some of the world’s most high profile events including the opening ceremony for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio and the Bastille Day celebrations at the Eiffel Tower in 2015 (see video below), says: “People think this is going to be big, enormous, but no, it’s just a little bit of art with pyro!

“I want to do the opposite of a normal fireworks show. Camp Hill is a very quiet area where hopefully the audience can be seated.

“We are celebrating 50 years since ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’ but there is also a line that runs from ‘Lucy’ in 1967 right up until today. We are trying to think about what has happened in that intervening half a century.”

Forming part of this summer’s ‘Sgt Pepper at 50’ celebrations, families are encouraged to experience the free event by bringing a picnic to the park, enjoying the pre-show entertainment staged by local arts organisations, ahead of the main event of ‘pyrotechnic poetry’ which starts at 10.30pm.
