A civic reception for the local boxers who took part in last weekend’s WBC tournament at Goodison Park will take place at Liverpool Town Hall today (2 June).

The televised event at the home of Everton Football Club saw victories for Merseysiders including Tony Bellew in the main event and David Price in his comeback fight.

Bellew claimed the WBC title by knocking out Illunga Makobu in the third round of his cruiserweight bout to become the first Briton to claim the belt since Carl Froch.

Price marked his heavyweight return by stopping Vaclaj Pejsar in the second round, while Birkenhead’s Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd defeated Pasquale Di Dolvio on points to become the WBC International Lightweight champion.

There was also success for Liverpool boxers Stephen, Callum and Paul Smith, Tom Farrell, Gerard Carroll and Skelmerdale’s Steve Brogan.

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson says: “In a city which is football-mad, it is sometimes easy to overlook the tremendous achievements of people who are at the top of their game in other sports.

“In Liverpool right now we have some of the best boxers in the world – I call them the Liverpool Lions – who are doing us proud representing the city on a global stage.

“What we saw at Goodison Park last Sunday night was a fantastic showcase for Liverpool, beamed live on TV, and most of the bill was made up of local talent.”

The civic reception comes as Liverpool’s Liam Smith prepares to defend his WBO super welter-weight title on Saturday (4 June) at the Echo Arena.
