Decision due on new Maghull train station

Merseyside looks set to get its first new train station in a decade.

Plans to create the new station in Maghull, the first since Liverpool South Parkway in 2006, have been recommended for approval at today’s Sefton Council planning committee meeting (18 January).

Proposals for Maghull North, which it’s hoped will create over 200 full-time jobs, include a staffed station building with ticket office; a 156 space car park and customer information screens.

The new station, which would be built on land off School Lane in the town, was given the green light by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority (LCRCA) last October.

According to the planning report, some concerns have been raised over the proximity of the proposed station to a residential development as well as a site which has been granted planning permission for 369 new homes.

In response to these objections, the report adds: “The proposals will bring significant economic benefits, not least the creation of significant additional full-time equivalent jobs, together with a variety of environmental and social benefits. These factors weigh heavily in the planning balance.

“Whilst it is understood there will be elements of inconvenience during the construction period both for residents and ultimately, for rail users, the proposals make acceptable provision for addressing more localised impacts on adjacent residents. It is not considered that these impacts outweigh the benefits referenced.”

Merseytravel says the development of a new station in the northern area of Maghull will help provide greater public transport access the wider area including parts of West Lancashire.

It’s expected that Maghul North will be served by the existing Liverpool Central – Ormskirk service, which operates at 15-minute intervals throughout the day.
