The final decision on plans to build new city centre student flats on the site of a former lap dancing club is expected to be made next week.

If plans are given the go ahead Rude, on Duke Street, will be demolished to make way for a five-storey block of student apartments.

The decision is set to be made by the planning committee on Tuesday 8 March and a report to be discussed by the committee explains that the development will offer ‘economic benefits and employment opportunities’.

Set to provide accommodation for 75 students, the proposal outlines the inclusion of a ground floor student common area, manned reception, central courtyard and entrances at both Duke Street and Wolstenholme Square linking the building to the regeneration of the opposite side of Wolstenholme Square.

Initial plans were halted as councillors objected to noise protection requirements for permanent residential accommodation as these conditions would have required Cream and Kazimier nightclubs to cease operations.

The subsequent closure of these clubs to make way for the regeneration of Wolstenholme Square allowed for the continuation of plans to develop the new student complex.
