Plans to demolish a well-known former pub in Walton have been recommended for approval despite more than 100 objections.

Applicant Mr N Redmond wants to replace The Plough on Rice Lane, built in 1894, with a 40-bedroom hotel.

His application for outline planning consent has been recommended for approval at a meeting of Liverpool City Council’s planning committee next week (30 October).

This is despite the council receiving a total of 106 objections to the proposals.

Those in opposition to the plans argue the loss of the “historic landmark building” would “ruin the heritage” of the area and maintain the building should be listed and saved.

In response to concerns, Mr Redmond notes that the building is in a poor state of repair and would require a “substantial amount of investment to retain and convert into a hotel” – something he describes as “not financially practical”.

Recommending the plans for approval, the report states: “The head of planning is satisfied that the proposal to demolish the existing building is acceptable in principle and the future hotel use would not have a detrimental impact on [the] Rice Lane Local Centre.”
