Eldon Grove redevelopment expected to begin next year

The redevelopment of Liverpool’s Grade II-listed Eldon Grove could commence next year as proposals to convert the building into modern apartments are said to be progressing.

A planning application to bring the historic flats back into use was submitted ahead of Christmas 2015 and it could go before Liverpool City Council’s planning committee by November.

Community-based housing association the Eldonian Group is behind the plans to regenerate Eldon Grove and has been working with the council and leaseholder JGLT on the project.

Opened by the Countess of Derby in 1912, Eldon Grove is situated in the Vauxhall area and is one of the oldest examples of council flats outside of London. It was last used as student housing before falling into a state of disrepair.

A spokesperson for the Eldonian Group tells Your Move: “Eldon Grove has been derelict for 20 years now and has become an eyesore to the community. If it doesn’t get redeveloped shortly this Grade II-listed building will be beyond repair.”

The plans to revamp Eldon Grove also include the creation of landscaped gardens at the front of the building.

The new apartments could be ready for residents within 12 to 18 months of the development work commencing.
