A week-long Festival of Archaeology will kick off in Liverpool tomorrow (20 July) bringing live experiments and activities for all ages.
The Museum of Liverpool celebration will run in partnership with Liverpool John Moores University and will span “centuries of this region’s history”.
Facial reconstruction specialists from Face Lab will be on hand to explain how skeletons can be used to understand people from the past and live experiments on the Formby Footprints will delve into prehistoric Merseyside, alongside a host of handling sessions, trails, role-players, crafts, talks and tours.
Ahead of the festival, which will run until 27 July, the museum’s curator of archaeology and the historic environment, says: “Our Festival of Archaeology is a bustling programme for people of all ages with an interest in archaeology and history.
“From prehistoric footprints to the recycling habits of the Vikings and clay pipes of the industrial age, the festival spans centuries of this region’s history.
“The festival also covers the future of archaeology, as Liverpool John Moores University’s research group Face Lab leads demonstrations of its latest methods of investigation and shows how new technology can help us understand our past.”
The festival comes to the Museum of Liverpool as it is also currently celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Merseyside Archaeology Society with a special display on show until September, and will host the society’s annual conference on 8-9 October.
