Liverpool City Council’s former HQ on Dale Street could be transformed into a four star hotel and restaurant under new plans.
A report to be discussed at a cabinet meeting next week (3 February) is recommending the landmark Grade II*-listed Municipal Buildings be sold to a Singapore-based property firm.
According to the report, Fragrance Group Limited (FGL) has tabled the highest offer for the city centre office, beating off competition from seven other interested parties.
The fee involved is yet to be disclosed although the report states that it will “realise a significant capital receipt for the council this financial year”.
FGL, which has a portfolio of more than 80 projects mainly in Australia and Singapore, last year unveiled striking plans to build a Beyoncé inspired skyscraper in Melbourne.
Councillor Malcolm Kennedy, cabinet member for regeneration, says: “Municipal Buildings has been a magnificent home for Liverpool City Council since the 1860s but we no longer have the staff numbers to justify retaining it.
“I’m delighted we have a buyer of international repute who is looking to use Liverpool to break into the UK and European hotel market. This will have a great impact in terms of generating jobs and boosting out international appeal.
“The sale will bring in much needed money which we can reinvest in reducing the costs of our capital infrastructure programme, as well as delivering ongoing savings by lowering our overheads.”
If approved, the building, which opened in 1866, is expected to be handed over in the spring.
