Giants creator scopes out Merseyside for 2018 return

Royal De Luxe’s Jean Luc Courcoult is on a mission to map out potential locations for the proposed return of the company’s giant puppets to Merseyside.

The firm’s creative director took a ferry cruise along the Mersey to scope out sites on both sides of the river yesterday (10 June), with Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson and Wirral Council leader Councillor Phil Davies also on board.

Royal De Luxe is in talks with Liverpool City Council to bring its enormous marionettes back to the city region in 2018 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Capital of Culture celebrations.

Opening up about his affection for Liverpool, Jean Luc tells Your Move: “It’s always something that is not concrete and cannot be defined about cities. It is a bit like a love story; you don’t know why you’re in love with somebody in particular but there is a kind of unconscious attraction which makes you love that person.

“One thing that’s for sure is that I love the people of Liverpool. They give us strength and I also think they’re very easy going. I travel around the world, but have become very attached to Liverpool.”

Jean Luc also hopes the proposed return of the giants to Merseyside will help forge closer links between Liverpool and Wirral, pointing out how the two locations have a long history of working together.

He adds: “It’s a different dimension over in Wirral. The two areas may be separated by a river, but they work closely together.

“The architecture is very interesting on both sides of the Mersey and the differences fascinate me. Liverpool is a very active hub while Wirral has very wide avenues and open spaces, so it is two cities with two different personalities, but they are bound by a history of working together.”

The giants, which previously visited the city in 2012 and 2014, could return to Merseyside as part of the year-long Eighteen for 18 cultural programme.
