Lime Street is to remain closed as work to make safe the former Futurist Cinema has not yet been completed.
The building was due to reopen today (9 June), however despite “good progress” being made on the derelict art deco building, Lime Street will remain closed until further notice.
Part of the busy city centre thoroughfare has been closed in both directions for over two weeks to allow contractors to remove unstable pieces of the building using a crane and cherry picker.
Repair work began on the former cinema following the completion of an independent structural report after SAVE Britain’s Heritage objected to Liverpool City Council’s plans for making the building safe.
A council spokesman says: “The independent structural engineer has made some changes to the original recommendations made over the work needed to make the façade of the Futurist safe.”
“Good progress has been made, but the road will remain closed into Thursday.
“As soon as we are able to reopen it we will let people know. In the meantime, we apologise for the inconvenience that it is causing.”
