Liverpool homes will be sold for just £1 in the second phase of the council’s Homes for a Pound Plus scheme.

Houses in Picton, off Smithdown Road, will be sold for £1 to owners who are willing to spend up to £30,000 refurbishing the properties and bringing them back to use.

Liverpool City Council is expecting the scheme to be over subscribed and has offered people who missed out in the first phase the chance to apply again. Other applicants can log on to www.liverpool.gov.uk/homesforapound by 31 July 2015 and fill in the application form.

Home for a Pound Plus includes homes on Britannia Avenue, Altcar Avenue, Childwall Avenue, Dorset Avenue, Bird Street, Richardson Street, Garrick Street, Tunstall Street and Webster Road.

The scheme works by selling the homes for £1, but buyers have to commit to refurbish the property with £30,000 of their own money. They must also live in the property for five years.

Buyers must also live or work within Liverpool City Council boundary, be in paid employment and be a first time buyer.

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson says: “Our pilot Homes for a Pound scheme has been hugely popular and is transforming run down properties into beautiful family homes.

“We are now in a position where we are expanding the scheme and are inviting applications from people who meet the criteria and interested in taking part.

“This is a really exciting scheme because this part of Picton is already being transformed through the building of the new Archbishop Blanch High School and nearby developments such as the new Edge Lane Retail Park and Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

“People moving into the area will be an integral part of it becoming a thriving community again.”

A buyer taking part in the first stage of the scheme has already received the keys to a new home, and the council hopes the scheme can help towards its targets of bringing 2,000 properties back into use in the city.
