A Philippine fast food chain which has more than 1,000 branches around the world is planning to open a flagship restaurant here in Liverpool.

Described as the Asian KFC, Jollibee is known for its burgers, fried chicken, spaghetti and Filipino dishes.

Bee World UK Ltd, part of the Jollibee Foods Corporation, has submitted plans to transform the former Lush store on Whitechapel into the eatery’s second UK site.

Thousands of people queued overnight to get their first taste of Jollibee’s menu earlier this month when the chain’s London restaurant opened in Earl’s Court.

Many would have no doubt sampled a ‘Chickenjoy’ meal, Jollibee’s signature dish, which consists of a piece of fried chicken with a side of spaghetti, covered in tomato sauce and topped with hot dog slices and ground beef.

The first Jollibee restaurant was opened in Cubao, Quezon City in the Philippines in 1978.

There are now over 1,000 Jollibee branches worldwide, including in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, East Asia, North America, and Europe.

According to plans submitted to Liverpool City Council, Jollibee’s Liverpool restaurant would be the “flagship branch in the North of England”.

A document included with the planning application adds: “Jollibee’s success lies in a family oriented approach which provides a modern comfortable eating environment with affordable price points providing value for money.

“The development will create 70 jobs in the town centre which is a significant boost for the local retail sector.

“At a time when confidence in the British high street is at an historical low, such investment in people and property should be supported.”
