A number of Liverpool’s most famous landmarks will turn orange today (25 November) in support of a campaign to raise awareness of domestic violence.

Venues including the Cunard Building, Radio City Tower, Liverpool Town Hall, the Everyman, FACT, Bluecoat and Merseyside Police’s HQ will light up in support of the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The buildings will be illuminated between 5pm and 7pm to symbolise a brighter future for victims of domestic violence and the city centre will also host a series of ‘invisible pavement messages’ to highlight the hidden problem of silence.

Liverpool DJ and presenter Ellie Phillips, who has spoken out about her own experiences of domestic violence in the past, will launch the campaign at 10am by revealing the first hidden message in Derby Square, which will appear in the shadow of the Law Courts when water is applied.

Ellie says: “I’m supporting the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women because it’s a human rights violation that is far too often swept under the rug or completely silenced.

‘’There are so many women who are trapped in situations where they feel unable to speak out, so I think that it’s therefore vital that those who can speak out, do so.

“I think it’s extremely important that we educate women and girls of all ages to understand the warning signs of violent behaviour, so that they are able to spot the red flags early on.”
