A new self-storage brand is transforming 36,000 sq ft of redundant retail space in Liverpool’s former Next building into the UK’s first inner-city storage hub.

StoreAway will open on 2 May in the heart of Liverpool ONE on St Peter’s Lane. It will be home to more than 400 lockers over four floors, as well as flexible office space for long or short-term use.

StoreAway allows users of the service a chance to take control of their storage needs via a smartphone app, where they are able to book a space, arrange a drop-in time or visit their designated locker 24 hours a day, with the process also allowing shared access with friends and family.

The announcement is part of a UK drive to transform more than a quarter of a million sq ft of redundant retail space on the UK’s high streets into storage space, with confirmed sites in Birmingham, Basildon, Cheltenham and Bath set to launch later this year.

Richard Lanyon, managing director of StoreAway, says: “Liverpool is the perfect place for us to launch StoreAway as it is an urban city with a very established and growing tourism sector, as well as a home to a massive yearly influx of students.

“We knew as soon as we began working on this project that we needed to have a presence in Liverpool because providing people with an accessible and cost-effective storage option would appeal to so many, visitors and residents alike.

“Prevailing property market dynamics, such as the demise of the traditional retail sector, has allowed us to take relatively abundant existing buildings such as this one in the city centre, and convert them in order to meet self-storage operational needs.”

As part of its offering, StoreAway has developed a measuring tool to quickly determine the storage solution that best suits peoples’ needs and save them paying for more space than they actually require.
