The Aintree-based ice sculptors behind the huge ‘Ice Henge’ installation featured in hit TV show ‘Game of Thrones’, is celebrating its 10-year anniversary.

Glacial Art is marking the milestone by heading to Istanbul to complete a special ‘forbidden forest’ project in a local shopping centre.

The firm, which has created sculptures for MTV, Rolex and the BBC, has been commissioned to undertake the piece by a private Turkish client.

Speaking ahead of the trip, Mat Foster, director, says: “As long as there are no more hiccups we will be taking a team of five of us over to Istanbul where we will have 10 days to carve 10 tonnes of ice.

“The installation will follow a ‘forbidden forest’ theme and be constructed in a giant freezer which will be installed in a shopping centre and will be on display for the whole of December.”

Mat and his business partner Matt Chaloner, met during university on a special effects course and decided to set up their own ice sculpting business in Liverpool after spotting a gap in the market.

In the future, the firm hopes to compete at the World Ice Carving Championship in Alaska.

Mat adds: “We’ve had our eye on Alaska for a long time now, but we have never really felt ready enough.

“With tens of thousands of spectators, and more than 100 sculptors from 30 different countries, it’ll be one of the biggest challenges the Glacial Art team has ever faced.”
