Liverpool ice sculptors Glacial Art are heading for a gruelling global competition next month.
The team, which has worked on high profile projects including TV’s ‘Game of Thrones’, will take part in the Alaska ice sculpting championships, known as ‘Ice Alaska’, for the first time.
Backed by Liverpool Gin, expert sculptors Mat Foster and Mat Chaloner will take their protégées Attila and Paul to tackle the week-long contest in sub-zero temperatures.
Mat and Mat, who have taken part in the European Ice Sculpting Championships for a number of years, are preparing to go head to head with some of the world’s best ice sculptors.
As they get set to take on the classic multi-block competition with 20 tonnes of ice to carve with, Mat Foster says: “The amount of ice we have to carve in Alaska is scary.
“Our blocks of ice will need to be moved by forklifts and cranes, and this is something we don’t have any experience in.”
With six days to turn the ice into a masterpiece, the finished work is in line to be the team’s largest ever at five metres tall and 3.5m wide.
The Glacial Art participants have hinted that they’ll be creating a “surreal tribute to a British legend” as they compete on the world’s stage from 4-9 March, and they’re hiring a supersized chainsaw alongside their usual tools for the creation.
