Events space Make Liverpool is to become a pop-up dance venue as part of this year’s Leap festival celebrations.

Merseyside Dance Initiative (MDI) is working with the owners of the Regent Street warehouse and Unity Theatre to convert the premises for the 25th anniversary of the popular dance event.

MDI has raised more than £5,000 through crowdfunding platform Kickstarter to fund the pop-up dance space, which will include a fully accessible dance theatre, a bar, catering facilities and breakout spaces for exhibitions and workshops.

Karen Gallagher MBE, artistic director of MDI, says: “Leap 2017 is a celebration of 25 years of dance in Liverpool and we are as passionate as ever about the ‘coming of age of dance’ in the city.

“We are seeing dance reach a wider audience then ever before and Leap as always will produce inspirational and challenging productions. We are excited to take over Make Liverpool, creating a pop-up dance house – a first for the city.”

Leap 2017’s line-up includes artist and choreographer Gary Clarke, Glasgow dance theatre company Barrowland Ballet and Hetain Patel, who will be performing his acclaimed ‘American Man’ piece.

The festival will take place between 1 and 12 March and will explore the theme of camouflage.
